Occasionally when I come to serve as a paperweight for the old queen, my obliging helpfulness is not appreciated, and I am forced to go away and sit on the floor with my back turned to signify utter indifference. This used to happen also when I guarded the pieces of the old tom’s jigsaw puzzles by lying down on them. But he soon found that I never move them, so he doesn’t move me either, and just works the puzzle around me. In this picture, you can see that for once my usefulness has been fully appreciated and that mutual pleasantness prevails.

A sample from Part II: Pictures of Pard

Under the bed is not the best hiding place when unusual things cause anxiety, but it is a good place for being temporarily invisible while listening and looking out for strange feet, loud noise machines, etc., or when there has been shouting at me because I have been stretching my back and exercising my claws on the bedspread, even though that is clearly what the bedspread is for.
