WWW Wednesday. This meme is from shouldbereading.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

• What are you currently reading?

Dashiell Hammett’s THE BIG KNOCKOVER (a story collection).  Originally published in 1924, and it’s fascinating to see what’s changed in mystery writing…and what hasn’t.  Also, dear dog could Hammett pack a punch in a sentence.

Summer, I’ve found, is a good time for short fiction – I can generally get through one story while sitting in the sun, and by the time I’m done it’s time to retreat back into the shade…

• What did you recently finish reading?

MEMORY OF WATER, Emmi Itärata.  It’s a post-apoc story set in Scandinavia, where corporate wars have made water into the most precious resource.  The narrator is the daughter of a Tea Master, who has a secret he passes on to her, and what she does with it (and how those around her react) is the meat of the story.  There is much that was lovely and haunting about the story, and the ending is one I didn’t entirely expect, and yet… I didn’t love the book.  I’m still trying to pinpoint why.

Warning: it may seem, from the description, that this is a YA novel.  It is…and it isn’t.  I’d say it’s more for older teens, if only for the indirect approach to the story, and some of the darker edges. There’s a lot of resonance with current events, obviously. Discussion after highly recommended.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

I have no idea.  I’m about to go into an intensive round of revisions and new proposal-writing, so it will probably be non-fiction, to even out my brain.  Anyone have any suggestions?

What about you? What are you reading, have you been reading, wanting to read next?
