War Stories is an upcoming anthology of military science fiction, aimed at exploring how warfare might affect the soldiers and civilians of tomorrow. According to editors Andrew Liptak and Jaym Gates:
War Stories isn’t an anthology of bug hunts and unabashed jingoism. It’s a look at the people ordered into impossible situations, asked to do the unthinkable, and those unable to escape from hell. It’s stories of courage under fire, and about the difficulties in making decisions that we normally would never make. It’s about what happens when the shooting stops, and before any trigger is ever pulled.
Cover art for the anthology is by Hugo-award-winning artist Galen Dara. Contributing authors include Joe Haldeman, Keith Brooke, Maurice Broaddus, Jake Kerr, Rich Larson, Yoon Ha Lee, Ken Liu, T.C. McCarthy, Mike Sizemore, Janine Spendlove, James L. Sutter, and me — Linda Nagata — with more authors to be announced. There’s also an open submission period — it just started today — so if you’re interested in writing military science fiction, take a look at the guidelines here.
And if you like to read military science fiction? Please consider supporting the War Stories Kickstarter project. The project launched yesterday, and already it’s nearly 25% of the way to its goal. If the Kickstarter succeeds, the anthology will be published by Apex Publications, most likely in 2014.
