To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

What are you currently reading?

Right now I’m reading Brightest Kind of Darkness by Patrice Michelle. Basically, I chose this novel to read next because I am reacting to a blog I read that challenged readers to try to find more indie gems to read. I was attracted to this book, a YA paranormal novel about teens with special abilities, because I haven’t read a YA in a while, and I’m writing a cozy mystery, so it is a nice change of pace. So far, I’m only two chapters into it, and I’m really enjoying the storytelling, as well as wondering what I would do if I dreamed the entire next day before I lived it. I don’t think I’d have waited as long as the protagonist Inara to try to make a few little changes. I’m way too inclined to tweak and “fix” things even without any supernatural abilities.

• What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished Mistress Blanche: Queen Elizabeth’s Confidante by Ruth Elizabeth Richardson. This is a dense and meaty non-fiction that a good friend (and Elizabethan-set novelist) Kathy Lynn Emerson lent me back in late October. It has taken me quite a while to work my way through because I’m trying to figure out all the family relationships and interconnections for another novel series I plan to write one day (after I do about another two years of research). Blanche Parry is a figure who is often glossed over, but she was the closest figure to a mother that Elizabeth ever had in her life, and their relationship survived many tests and court intrigues.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

Given that the holidays are upon us, and my Kindle app is loaded with books, I suspect I will consume several very interesting novels that catch my eye as I scroll through the bookshelf.  I definitely want to read Neal Stephenson’s Reamde. It’s loaded into the Kindle and is already tempting me. But Stephenson is intense, so I may read a few lighter works before I get to his.

  2. Pooks,

Word of warning about Mistress Blanche — very dense and scholarly. I’ve taken to making charts (there are some in the book, but I wanted even more) to help myself keep it all straight. Darn the medieval habit of naming every woman Anne, Mary, or Elizabeth 🙂 Blanche must have felt a bit like an outlier in the name department.

  3. I haven’t heard of any of these, with the exception of the Stephenson book. Though I haven’t read anything by him. I need to stop participating in this meme…it always leaves me with more books on my ereader/wishlist then I can ever read.

    My WWW Wednesday is here.
