Appreciating Anne McCaffrey

by Vonda N. McIntyre

Anne was a force of nature, a larger-than-life person of enthusiasm and generosity. I’ll always remember how kind she was to me when I was a no-name pup.

Dreamsnake unexpected won the Hugo for Best Novel at the Brighton Worldcon. Anne’s novel The White Dragon was expected to win — certainly I expected it to win. When I came off the stage clutching the Hugo, trying to figure out a graceful way to hold it (no such thing), and in rather a state of shock, the first person to congratulate me was Anne McCaffrey.

She gave me a big hug, and her congratulations were sincere.

She lived in Ireland and I live in Seattle, so our paths didn’t cross very often. But it was always a pleasure to see her, and I will miss her.
