There are days when the writing business makes as much sense as Lewis Carroll, and when pondering grammar rules, it’s best to keep his advice in mind: Contrariwise, if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic. Or, that’s grammar.
