Happy Birthday, Ursula! — 150 Comments

  1. Hippo Birdies!

Thank you for the many hours of joy and perception I’ve received from your work.

The moggies are rolling in catnip in your honor. Or so they say.

  2. It may be your birthday, Ursula, but we’re the ones who’ve gotten gifts over the years. Thank you for so many stories. 🙂

  3. Happy Birthday Ms. LeGuin! From my initial discovery of Earthsea all those decades ago to my recent reading of Lavinia, you’ve been a constant and wonderful part of my life for many many years now. Thank you!

  4. Happy Birthday to you, Ms. Le Guin! I discovered your books in, of all things, an anthropology course while an undergrad and have enjoyed your stories ever since.
    Best wishes,

  5. May you have a rich, warm, and loving birthday.

Words cannot express how much your wise and wonderful stories have meant to me. The Earthsea books and their later developments and Lathe of Heaven are engraved in my heart. The Dispossessed was a revelation. Your gentle, whimsical lessons in Steering the Craft inspired one of my writers’ groups. When I opened Tehanu I hoped someday to write one sentence that conveyed as much so succinctly and poetically.

You have given so much to all of us. Thank you, and enjoy your well-earned celebration.

  6. May your day be filled with joy, love and laughter. Thanks for all the sublime words and work. My calling card uses the tag line “word-seeking missile”. I bor…, er, stole it from you.

  7. Best wishes with gratitude for the pleasure your writings have brought to so many readers and the many new places you’ve taken my imagination.

  8. My heart lights up everytime I see your name. I have loved your writings. Thank you and Happy Birthday!

  9. Happy birthday! Thank you for all the worlds you’ve let me see and all the thinking you’ve led me to. (And thank you for Catwings, who were some of my very favorite childhood friends.)

  10. Happy 81st, Ms. LeGuin. I’ve treasured your writing since I was small, and your stories continue to delight me. Of all of the writers I’ve encountered, I think you take the most care of and for your readers.

Peace to you, and blessings for another year.

  11. Ms. LeGuin, A very Happy Birthday to you. I wish for you a day and year filled with joy. Thank you for the joy and wisdowm you brought to my life.

  14. Happiest of birthdays, Ursula! May it be fantastical, wonderous, and filled with blessed light!

  15. To almost quote a distinguished predecessor: I am immensely fond of you all, and eighty-one years is too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits (or people as the case may be.) I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. Thank You All!!!

  16. Happy Birthday.
Many thanks for the entertainment and insights your works have added to my life.

  17. Late birthday greetings to one of the writers who has inspired me most in my life.

  18. I’m late to this party, but I’ll echo many here who say Happy Birthday, and thank you. I re-read The Dispossessed every few years, and it always breaks my heart–and I always learn something from it.

  19. again, late to the party, but happy birthday to the writer who inspired me most. I I hope you’ve still got some of that Sinshan wine left!

  20. Dear Ursula
It is my great delight in being given this opportunity to wish you a happy birthday. One of the best moments of my life was at last meeting you and having you sign a treasured copy of A Wizard of Earthsea. May joy come to you this year that equals all that you have given us in your wonderful stories.
