Frugality: Altering

Writers never waste anything. All of life, everything around us, is useful and goes into the stew. And we’re fixers. If it’s not right, if something is wrong, the instinct is to fix it. This little blog series is about thrift — using stuff or fixing it so it can be used. And today, we have a denim jacket.

I bought this jacket to replace one that I lost on the way back from the Seattle Worldcon. (It may have stayed on the train and is now in California.) That one was plain and tight — I rescued it from the back of my daughter’s closet. So this one I did take care to buy larger, but otherwise it is similar — no front fastenings, not long or loose. I was charmed by the studs that decorate it, so pretty!

Once I got it home, however, a difficulty arose. Have a look at the underside of that cross motif, in the center back:

Owtch, right? I have very long hair, and little metal things like this are asking for trouble. However, not to worry! A fix will be a little fussy, but not difficult. In fact, I can kill two birds with one stone by including pockets. And next post, I will!
